A concept for typeface design?

In my opinion, it has always been tough to start a typeface. I need a clear, good concept to start with. So, what makes it good?

I am currently finding an inspiration for this project through the stories of foundries on their website, books or any kind of medias. It is actually dubious how directors from foundries generate the concept of a typeface. It can be drawn from:

• Memory, sort of like a combination of multiple cultures: Mallory by Tobias Frere-Jones, Sohnë by Klim Type Foundry, GT Maru by Grilli Type, etc.
• One or many outstanding pieces of lettering: Gotham by Hoefler & Tobias Frere-Jones, Decimal by Hoefler & Co., FF DIN by Albert Jan-Pool, etc.

• An existed typeface (or revival): Founders Grotesk by Klim Type Foundry, Trajan by Carol Twombly and Robert Slimbach, Sabon by Jan Tschichold, etc.
• An art concept or a complicating theory: GT Ultra by Grilli Type, Untitled Collection by Klim Type Foundry, Signifier by Klim Type Foundry, etc.
• A random mutation: Dalat by Approximate Type, Uber Move by MCKL Type, Pinterest Sans by Grilli Type, etc.
